Anti-Common Core rally held in Lindenhurst

Parents pounded the pavement against Common Core testing Saturday in Lindenhurst.

Despite the snow, more than 200 parents and teachers rallied outside against the curriculum and Gov. Andrew Cuomo's education reforms. John Mansfield, an eighth-grade science teacher and father, says high-stakes testing stresses out kids and is not the way to improve education.

"The implementation of the Common Core was done so haphazardly and so unjustly that it is a mockery of what education should be," said Mansfield.

The group of parents and teachers then went inside Lindenhurst Middle School to continue their protest. It was one of many rallies that took place across the state Saturday and this week.

Education experts spoke to the crowd, saying more and more parents are deciding to have their children opt out of the testing.

As News 12 Long Island has reported, the Comsewogue School District will vote next Monday on a proposal to allow the district to consider not administering the tests.

Common Core standardized testing takes place next month.
