A public meeting was held in Riverhead regarding a plan to expand an oil storage facility in Northville.

United Riverhead Terminal representatives told the standing room only crowd that it wants to store gas pumped in through a pipeline from the Long Island Sound. They are also applying for a permit to build two new tanks used for blending ethanol into gasoline.

Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter says traffic congestion is the main complaint he's hearing from residents.

Critics of the plan say they are also concerned about 18-wheel tankers carrying flammable gasoline on the North Fork's residential and rural roads.

The company told residents at the public meeting that the gasoline project will create jobs and produce minimal traffic impacts.

Supervisor Walter says the board will accept written public comments for the next month. He says no date has been set for a decision on the permit.
