Lindenhurst residents oppose plans to build cell tower

A battle is brewing among residents in Lindenhurst Village over a plan to build a cellphone tower in a parking lot next to the Long Island Rail Road station.

The plan for the tower was proposed by Island Towers LLC.

Many residents who live near the site say that they are opposed of the plan because they fear the possible radiation from the tower could cause health risks.

Experts say health risks associated with living near cellphone towers have not yet been scientifically established. However, some independent studies in Germany and Israel show that if you are within 15,000 feet of a cell tower it could increase your risk of cancer by up to 400 percent.

A public hearing about the cell tower will be held Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Lindenhurst Village Hall.

Village officials would not say how much rental income the agreement would bring in. Similar deals in the past have reportedly brought in $100,000 or more per year.

Lawyers for Island Towers LLC would not comment on the figure.
