The Suffolk County police officer who was shot in the line of duty has been released from the hospital.
Officer Mark Collins, who is part of the Suffolk Police Gang Unit, was performing a traffic stop in Huntington Station Wednesday night when he was shot in the neck and hip.
The officer was greeted with a warm welcome from police and fire personnel as he left Stony Brook University Hospital Sunday.
Collins, a 12-year veteran of the force, also serves as a volunteer at the North Bellmore Fire Department.
Officials say that Collins is eager to get back to work. Doctors say they are optimistic that he will make a full recovery.
The suspected gunman, Sheldon Leftenant, was arrested following the shooting. Prosecutors say the 22-year-old suspect was out on parole for a previous shooting conviction.
Leftenant is behind bars and being held without bail.
