New York is considering raising the age of criminal responsibility to 18 years old.
New York is one of only two states that charge offenders who are 16 and 17 years old as adults. That means sending those offenders to adult correctional facilities.
Suffolk Sheriff Vincent DeMarco says regardless of if crimes are violent or not, teenagers will benefit from going through the juvenile system until the age of 18.
"Someone commits a serious crime, there are still going be repercussions for it and they're still going to go away to a secure juvenile detention facility," he says. "But the services in those facilities are geared towards children and the development of their minds."
