Kings Park woman accused of fatal wrong-way DWI crash

A Kings Park woman is accused of a drunken wrong-way crash in Smithtown that killed an Island Park man overnight.
Natalia Simons, 36, was arraigned this afternoon. Police say Simons was driving north on Route 25A at around midnight when she crossed into the southbound lane. Police say she then slammed into another car head on.
The driver of the second car, 59-year-old Larry Garwood, of Island Park, was killed. Garwood worked as a radiology supervisor at St. Catherine's of Siena Medical Center.
Simons was charged with misdemeanor DWI and released on $50,000 bail. She is due back in court next month.
Garwood's family feels she should never have been given such a low bail.
"I think there needs to be harsher laws," says Nicole Eye, Garwood's stepdaughter. "I don't think it's fair that she gets to go to court, be arraigned and gets to go home, go lay in her own bed for the rest of the day and think about what she's done. Yeah, she'll live with this for the rest of her life ... but she has a life."
