Remains of Shannan Gilbert buried in Amityville

The remains of a woman who sparked the search for a serial killer were buried Thursday after more than three years.

Shannan Gilbert was buried at Amityville Cemetery. She vanished in 2010, and while searching for her body, police discovered 10 sets of human remains along Ocean Parkway. Police concluded that the discovery was the work of a serial killer.

Gilbert's body was found in December 2011. Investigators think she might have drowned.

Gilbert's remains were at the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office throughout the police investigation until it was released for an independent autopsy that was performed Monday.

The results of the family's autopsy have not been released yet.

Suffolk police say they will not comment on the case until new information is discovered.
