Officials are investigating if simmering racial tensions played a role in an off-campus brawl involving Connetquot High School students.

Police say the fight happened on Remington Boulevard in Ronkonkoma Saturday afternoon, in an industrial area about one mile from the school. A 15-year-old student suffered a broken jaw in the fight.

A picture provided to News 12 that was allegedly snapped at the scene of the brawl shows one student holding a baseball bat and another apparently wearing brass knuckles.

The injured teen, Nicholas Abrahamsen, was hospitalized at Stony Brook University Hospital.

A student that was involved in the fight, Corbett Robinson, and his mother say he was subjected to harassment and racial slurs for months and they claim the school did nothing.

"We took matters into our own hands and some kid got hurt," he said.

Despite the claim that racial slurs led up to the fight, many students News 12 spoke with said it was an isolated incident and that there are no racial tensions at the school.

Joseph Raimondi, a friend of Abrahamsen's, says race did not play a role in the conflict and that the students simply do not like each other. Abrahamsen's stepfather agrees, and says Nick is a great kid who didn't deserve what happened.
