East End residents and local elected officials gathered at Southold Town Hall Sunday for a meeting on what many say is a highly disruptive problem: helicopters and low-flying aircraft.

Residents on both forks say the loud noise from the aircraft is affecting their quality of life.

In the town of East Hampton, the supervisor says there have been more than 22,000 noise complaints over the past 12 months. As a result, the town has considered proposals that would ban helicopters on weekends during the summer, enact a mandatory airport curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m., and limit other noisy aircraft as well.

Rep. Lee Zeldin (R-Shirley) wrote a letter to the FAA asking the agency to consider other measures that could help mitigate the noise.

But some opponents told News 12 last month that if the proposed restrictions become law in East Hampton, the town's airport and the local businesses that rely on it would be deeply affected.

A public meeting will be held in Wainscott Thursday night to discuss East Hampton's proposed restrictions.
