Salt:
True sea salt comes directly from ocean salt water, following a process of evaporation that results in two salt layers. The first layer contains a light colored salt that looks much like refined table salt; the second layer consists of a darker salt that contains the greater percentage of trace minerals. Mixing the two layers results in a grayish-looking salt that clumps together in a damp environment. According to the article "Salts that Heal, Salts that Kill" by Jeffrey Warber, MD, DC, natural sea salt consists of 98 percent sodium chloride. The remaining two percent consists of additional salts that together contain over 100 trace minerals.
Salts vary quite a lot in the amount of sodium chloride so read labels.

Essential Minerals:
The magnesium, calcium, potassium, manganese, phosphorous and iodine salts present in sea salt provide your body with minerals essential for good health. For example, magnesium is necessary for proper immune, brain and nerve cell function, as well as being a component in metabolism. Calcium and phosphorous are essential to bone formation and iodine is important to the cell metabolism required for normal growth and development.
The founder of the website BreastCancerChoices.org, Lynne Farrow, says the amount of iodine added to table salt is minimal and dissipates shortly after the container is opened. She argues most of us need iodine supplements.
