Friday's wind and rain was cause for trepidation on the South Shore.

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said he was most concerned about Fire Island, and he took a tour of the beach earlier in the day. Bellone examined the sand dunes that were devastated by Sandy and now serve as a first line of defense for thousands of homes.

"As we learned from Superstorm Sandy, it's far better to be cautious and prepared than it is to be hit unexpected," said Bellone.

Erosion and tidal flooding was monitored along the shoreline. Areas like downtown Ocean Beach saw some flooding at high tide.

Storm precautions were also taken in Nassau County. Work is continuing on a massive berm that Long Beach officials hope will protect the city against any potential tidal surge.
