State steps in, issues ruling on Massapequa sixth-grade relocation
The state has decided that Massapequa sixth-grade students will be going to the Berner Middle School this fall.
The district had originally moved sixth grade from the elementary schools to the middle school, but reversed the decision last month.
Some parents say they want their kids to go to Berner Middle School because they would have more opportunities. State Education Commissioner MaryEllen Elia agreed and issued a stay order.
"I’m happy they made the change and the kids are going to go forward," says Richard Brown, of Massapequa.
The school board says it is weighing all of its legal options if it decides to change the decision.
