State Senate candidate David Denenberg drops out of race after scam allegations
Legislator David Denenberg has dropped out of the race for state Senate after being accused of a scam involving his former law firm.
The scam allegedly bilked a client of his former law firm out of more than $2 million over an eight-year period.
Garden City law firm Davidoff, Hutcher & Citron filed a 22-page complaint today accusing the eight-term Nassau legislator of billing legal clients for work that was never done.
The complaint states that Denenberg (D - Merrick) is guilty of "heinous criminal misconduct," calling him "a rogue lawyer" and "devious criminal."
According to the complaint, "These bills, mailed via US Postal Service or transmitted to the client over the Internet, all at Denenberg's direction - were works of fiction."
Shortly after the suit was filed, and two months before Election Day, Denenberg announced he was withdrawing from the race.
"I retained counsel to vigorously defend me against these allegations, and prosecute my claims against the firm. I look forward to cooperating with [the] US attorney's office to establish the truth," Denenberg said in a statement. "My family, the electorate, the campaign and this position are way too important to be subject to outrageous allegations and negative attacks against me personally. Therefore, I withdraw from the race."
Nassau Democratic Chair Jay Jacobs tells News 12 that Denenberg will not be off the ballot entirely come November. He say the plan is to put him up for a state Supreme Court judgeship.
Jacobs also says he has no idea who will replace Denenberg in the race for state Senate.
