A state assemblywoman from Manhattan has proposed to take guns away from peace officers, which include correction, court, probation, parole officers and bay constables.

The proposal from Linda Rosenthal reads peace officers should be "prohibited from carrying or using a firearm during the scope of employment. An exception shall be made when a peace officer has possession of a firearm for the purpose of disposing such firearm."

Sheriff Errol Toulon says he opposes the proposal, and he has sent a letter to Long Island's state Senate and Assembly delegations.

The head of the union for court officers also sent a letter to Rosenthal, saying, "Maybe you don't realize what we do? Maybe you are a law enforcement hater? Or maybe you just do not do your due diligence as an elected official."

He also says that armed court officers "provide security for judges, attorneys, and court users."

A spokesperson for Rosenthal tells News 12 that she is currently in session in Albany debating other bills, but that she would likely provide a statement or interview later to explain why she thinks peace officers should be unarmed.
