A rate hike for National Grid customers could turn out to be less than originally expected.

The original proposal listed a increase of $174.7 million, which would cost ratepayers about $13.50 more a month.

But the state Department of Public Service is asking the company to cut nearly a third of it's proposed increase starting in 2017.

National Grid says it is reviewing the rulings and will respond by June 10.

The utility released a statement that said in part, "We feel our proposals and the costs associated with them are essential to provide customers with a safe and reliable gas service... to meet the needs of a 21st-century economy."
