Three people died in Stamford three days in a row following drug overdoses believed to be connected to fentanyl, police say.
Stamford police detective Sgt. Sean Boeger says the cases involved adults in their 20s, 30s, and 60s and took place Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
He says at least two of the cases involved heroin and crack cocaine and that based on physical evidence, it's likely the drugs used were laced with fentanyl.
The incidents come after more tragedy in Hartford where a 13-year-old student apparently overdosed on fentanyl earlier this month.
Sergeant Boeger says over the last few years there has been an uptick in fentanyl overdoses adding that 80 to 90% of the overdoses he's seen involve fentanyl.
Boeger says there's two reasons people come into contact with fentanyl, those who use illicit drugs recreationally or those suffering from addiction.
He stresses fentanyl is a quick-acting drug with deadly effects.
Stamford police say there are several programs in the city for those battling addiction.
They offer treatment and also Narcan kits.
