City leaders in Stamford are taking aim at imposing stricter gun laws that previously failed to pass in the state.

Officials are looking into four different gun laws. The big one would ban so-called "ghost guns," which are assembled with a kit and are often untraceable because they don't have serial numbers. Bridgeport recently passed a similar ban after seizing seven unregistered "ghost guns." Stamford officials also want to ban homemade guns made with a 3-D printer.

City Rep. Rodney Pratt says he's tired of gun violence on Stamford's west side. 

"I just think there's a lot of things we can do – no-brainer type things that we can do to help make it safer with guns," says Pratt.  "Our voters are concerned about their safety."

Another proposal would ban recognition of out-of-state gun permits, although currently the state of Connecticut already has no reciprocity agreements with any other state.

The Connecticut Citizens Defense League calls the proposals "unreasonable."  They say, "Certain persons in positions of power have moved beyond concerns for public safety and are now intentionally out to spite law abiding gun owners."

Stamford Mayor David Martin says he supports tighter gun laws, but feels they are unenforceable at the city level.
