South Fork villages consider limits on mansion size
Several villages on the South Fork are trying to slow down what they say has been a disturbing trend of historic homes being bought, torn down and replaced by much larger and more modern looking homes.
Sag Harbor is considering a three-month moratorium on new homes that are larger than 3,000 square feet. East Hampton wants to lower the size limit of homes on certain lots.
Critics of the proposals include homeowners and builders who argue that size alone does not mean a house can't blend in to an existing neighborhood.
The proposed building moratorium in Sag Harbor will be discussed at Village Hall Tuesday night.
