Authorities seized about 100 animals that were found in deplorable conditions in a Carle Place home.
Officials say snakes, turtles, cats, dogs, rabbits and even a baby alligator were found in the 11th Street home. Some turtles were being kept in an inflatable pool in the backyard.
Some of the animals found in the home are illegal to possess, including a Burmese python. And there were also dead animals found in the home.
Authorities say 20-year-old Christopher Koenig is facing animal cruelty charges.
Neighbors who spoke with News 12 say they had no idea so many creatures were being kept there. They say Koenig lives at the home with his brother, mother and a friend.
A friend, Sanjay Samlall, says Koenig worked at a reptile shop and "loves animals." But Samlall says he had no idea his friend was keeping so many animals at home, and says he would never think Koenig wouldn't take good care of his pets.
Koenig’s mother declined to speak with News 12.
News 12 is told that the reptiles, amphibians and some of the fish seized at the home will be taken to a Massachusetts animal sanctuary, where they will be used for educational purposes at museums, zoos and schools.
