Wednesday marked one year since NYPD Detective Brian Moore died after being shot in the line of duty.
On May 2, 2015, Moore, of Massapequa, was on foot patrol and went to question a suspect in Queens Village when he was shot in the face. He died two days later.
NYPD Commissioner William Bratton on Wednesday spoke at a memorial at the scene of the shooting on 104th Road, where officers also placed a wreath for the fallen detective.
"He had the gift. The gift of the eye as we call it, the eye on the street, to go instinctively towards harm's way, towards the danger," Bratton said.
Moore's father also spoke, saying that "he was someone who gave so much and never asked anything in return."
In Oceanside, Long Islanders gathered for a candlelight vigil to remember Moore. His mother encouraged his fellow officers to move past the grief of his death by focusing on the way he lived.
"He lit up the room every time he walked in," said Irene Moore. "Everybody wanted to be near him, everybody couldn't wait for him to show up. So let's all just take a moment and remember one of those good memories that we have of him and that way we will keep him alive in our hearts."
Moore, who was 25 years old at the time of his death, was a rising star in the NYPD, having made more than 150 arrests in just under five years on the force.
Later this month, a bronze statue in Moore's honor will be unveiled at Plainedge Park.
