Slain NYC officers' kids receive $80,000 gift
(AP) - A foundation established by former Yankees owner George Steinbrenner is giving $80,000 to an education fund for the daughters of a slain New York City police officer. The Silver Shield Foundation announced the gift on Thursday. Officer Peter Figoski was gunned down on Monday while responding to a break-in at a home in his Brooklyn precinct. He left behind four daughters, ages 14 through 20.
The foundation provides support to the families of police officers and firefighters who die in the line of duty. It was established by Steinbrenner in 1982. The alleged shooter and four other men were arrested and are facing murder charges in the killing.
