Friends and family are grieving the loss of a senior at Shoreham-Wading River High School who was killed in a car crash.
Police and the school district confirmed that Melissa Marchese, 18, passed away following Thursday night's crash in Shoreham. They say a car carrying Marchese and two other teens was traveling southbound on Miller Avenue and making a left on 25A. It then collided with another car heading west on 25A.
Police say the three teens and the driver of the other car were all taken to the hospital.
Family and friends told News 12 that Marchese passed away at Stony Brook Hospital. The other two teens, Caroline Tyburski and Evan Flannery, and the driver of the other car, Michael Troiano, 34, were treated and released from area hospitals.
Maeve McNamara says she will remember her friend as someone who could brighten spirits.
“If you were in a bad mood, she'd make you laugh,” she said. “She was always there for that. And if you felt bad about something, you could always talk to her. She was always somebody you could talk to.”
School staff were on hand at the high school's library Saturday evening for anyone who needed support.
School administrators say a mental health team will be on hand next week for students as they return to school.
