A bill to ban discrimination based on hair was introduced by Sen. Cory Booker.
An incident at a New Jersey wrestling match last year in which a ref forced an athlete to cut off his dreadlocks or forfeit the match prompted the bill.
Sen. Booker, who is also a Democratic candidate for president, says the bill would ban discrimination based on hair textures and styles commonly associated with a particular race.
There is currently a similar bill in the New Jersey state Legislature.
Booker says two states have already adopted laws against hair discrimination.
