Riverhead officials are asking residents to limit their water consumption amid hot weather.
The town pumps about 24 million gallons of water a day this time of year, according to officials. About 80 percent of that water is used on lawns, they say.
But unsightly lawns are seen as a problem among homeowners. "It's hot and all the lawns are dying," says resident Jodi Dimpflmaier.
"Everybody wants the water between 2 and 7 every morning," says Riverhead Supervisor Sean Walter. The town has the capacity, but not for all homes at the same time, according to Walter.
Walter is encouraging residents to water their lawns on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays between 8 p.m. and midnight.
Michael O'Connell, of the Long Island Water Conference, says all Long Islanders should do their best to curb water use. Otherwise, water may have to be used from storage tanks.
"God forbid in an emergency there was a fire or something like that," says O'Connell. "That's the main purpose for having these water storage tanks."
The town hasn't seen significant rainfall in several weeks, says O'Connell.
