Amazon Prime Day kicks off Monday and News 12 spoke with a retail expert to make sure you get the best tips and deals.
Amazon Prime Day is on Monday and Tuesday -- a sale the online giant is comparing to Black Friday or Cyber Monday.
Jack Mandel is a retail expert and marketing professor at Nassau Community College. He says this is Amazon's chance to increase profits and shoppers should take advantage of the discounts.
Mandel says to make a list beforehand of things you want to buy and check to see if it's on sale for Prime Day before you order. He also says if you don't need it now, you don't have to feel pressured to get it just because it's on sale.
"If they're going to need it six months from now, don't," Mandel says. "Because there will be another sale in six months."
Peter Mrakovcic of Great Neck says he will be buying online for Prime Day.
"Online is the new trend for a lot of people. But I think it's affecting a lot of retailers like Target and Walmart," Mrakovcic says.
Target and Walmart are also having online sales around this time to try to compete with Amazon.
As the box stores work to stay competitive, there are shoppers who still like the experience of heading to the store -- to touch and feel the product before they buy it.
"I like to go to the store and actually see the products. I'm old-fashioned," says Adela Dedigeo of Hicksville.
According to Internet Retailer, last year's Amazon Prime Day sale pulled near in $4.2 billion. The sale is expected to bring in $6 billion this year.
