Residents oppose possible senior center in Dix Hills
Some residents in Dix Hills are fighting a proposal to build a senior housing complex in their community.
Dix Hills residents who oppose the three-story building say they pay high taxes for the park-like setting of their community.
"We don't want it to look like Queens, we don't want it to look like Deer Park Avenue going all the way south," says resident Gail Jospha.
The 175,000-square-foot facility would be built on Deer Park Avenue in Huntington.
Brightview, a Maryland-based developer, has asked the Town of Huntington to rezone the land so it can build on what is now two nurseries. The 10-acre piece of land is currently zoned for 1 acre of residential housing.
The attorney for one of the property owners says the project is the right use for the land.
"There will be a huge amount of open space to keep it consistent with the character of the neighborhood and there will be maximum buffers for any of our neighbors," says attorney Andrew Campanelli.
Residents say they are prepared for a legal battle if the town allows the zoning changes.
