Residents and elected officials say they are upset over an oil spill in Gravesend Bay last month they say was not reported by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

As much as 27,000 gallons of diesel fuel was dumped in the waterway around 4 a.m. on March 30, according to Councilman Mark Treyger. News 12 is told that a barge operator contacted the Coast Guard to let them know about the spill.

Treyger says he first learned about the spill from environmental advocates, not the DEC.

The DEC told News 12 that it worked immediately to clean it up, and that recent rain storms helped to break up the oil.  

Residents and officials say they would like a full investigation by the Brooklyn district attorney and New York attorney general. They also hope the Bayside Fuel Depot, which is allegedly responsible for the spill, will be held accountable.
