Residents frustrated by noise from Islip Rifle, Pistol and Archery Range

The Islip Rifle, Pistol and Archery Range is utilized by hundreds of shooters each year. Many law enforcement officials and government agencies also rent out the space to practice.
Residents in the area have been complaining about the constant noise from the range. The issue came to a head last week when the town council rejected a contract from the U.S. Marshal Service to rent out the space.
Supervisor Tom Croci, who voted for the contract, told News 12, "The town board will continue to review and evaluate the Islip Rifle Range in an effort to strike a balance between those using the range and nearby neighbors."
Councilman Steve Flotteron, who voted against the contract, says the town's Parks Department is working on a plan to create more barrier walls and even an overhang to cover the range.
Sources at the range disagree with resident complaints and claim shooting lasts anywhere from five minutes to, at most, 30 minutes during the week.
The U.S. Marshals contract and a proposed plan to deal with the sound could come up at next week's council meeting.
