Residents: Apartment complex plan is too big for Wheatley Heights
A farmland owner in Wheatley Heights is hoping to build an apartment complex on his land, though Town of Babylon residents believe the project is too big.
Gustave Wade owns the last working farm in the Town of Babylon at the Colonial Spring Farm and Nursery. He envisions building a 264-unit complex on land that used to be a pumpkin farm.
The civic association in Wheatley Heights and Dix Hills says the apartment plan is too massive for their town's services to handle.
"The density, the traffic, it's too big for our fire department to handle," says civic leader Christopher Black.
Cliff Stubbs, of the community's neighborhood watch, says the influx of people in the area will cause a problem.
"Things will just erupt. [Police and fire departments] may not be able to respond in an immediate way, and therefore would have a negative impact on our community," says Stubbs.
Wade insists that the project is not too big, and has submitted his own traffic plan to the Town of Babylon Planning Board. The Board has not made a final decision on the project, pending another hearing later this month.
