Report: U.S. tops list of car crash fatalities by wide margin
The United States has the highest fatality rate for car crashes in the world, according to a new federal study.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study says the U.S. crash death rate was more than twice the average of other high-income countries in 2013. It also found that Americans spend more time in cars than people in other wealthy countries.
Experts point to drunken driving as one of the major reasons for the large number of deaths.
"Drunk driving staggeringly continues to account for about one-third of traffic deaths," says Alec Slatky, of AAA.
AAA says it's a disheartening statistic given the intense public education about the dangers of drunken driving in recent years.
The high death rate has also been blamed on distracted driving and speeding.
According to the study, there were more than 32,000 crash deaths in the U.S. in 2013.
The study also found the biggest increase in fatal accidents involved drivers between 15 and 20 years old.
