Report: NYCFC eyes Harlem River for new stadium
The New York City Football Club may move out of Yankee Stadium and onto its own turf in Mott Haven.
According to published reports, the team is considering building its own stadium on an empty lot between Lincoln and Third avenues.
The website NewYorkYimby.com, which tracks new development proposals, says the $700 million project would create a 26,000-seat stadium and a surrounding mixed-use complex dubbed the Harlem River Yards.
Part of the plan includes a medical facility and multiple waterfront high-rise buildings. There would be thousands of apartments included, with 550 of them designated for affordable housing.
Supporters say there are many soccer fans in the Bronx's sizeable Hispanic community, but critics say they would rather see American football return to New York City.
Both sides, however, agree that the project could bring jobs and revenue to the area.
NYCFC would not confirm the plans, but a spokesperson said the club is "in active pursuit of a new home."
The team has played out of Yankee Stadium, which seats about 50,000, since 2013.
