A new report on child sex abuse in the Diocese of Rockville Centre identifies 51 alleged pedophiles who are associated with the diocese and accused of molesting hundreds of children.
Harold Siering, an advocate for survivors of child sex abuse, says a Franciscan brother raped him countless times while he was a student at St. Joseph's in Babylon.
“I survived that, and now I'm fighting so that other kids don't have to go through this," Siering says.
The report, named Hidden Disgrace II, was put together by law firms that work with survivors in the hope that other survivors will come forward.
Attorneys say the report also shows the locations where priests accused of being pedophiles worked.
Law firms want to get the word out because of a pending deadline for a compensation program offered by the Diocese of Rockville Centre.
Phase I is open to those who have already reported abuse and closes March 31. Phase II, for all others, closes on April 30.
“We believe only 10 percent of those who have been sexually abused by priests on Long Island have come forward,” says Patrick Noaker, an attorney with Lawyers Helping Survivors of Child Sex Abuse.
Siering, who now advocates for tougher laws against pedophiles, says he wants victims to be brave and be strong.
“Seek help so we can help you,” he told News 12.
