Report: Clinics fail when it comes to birth control
Some Bronx clinics are failing to supply teens with emergency contraceptives, according to a report released by the public advocate.
Advocate Betsy Gotbaum's report states that five out of eight Bronx clinics run by the New York City Health and Hospital Corporation did not have the contraceptives available for same-day pickup.
Those facilities include Jacobi Medical Center, Gun Hill Health Center, Morrisania Center, Highbridge Health Center and Segundo Ruiz Belvis Center.
The HHC claims the report is confusing its teen health clinics with adolescent health centers. The HHC says the latter provides emergency contraceptives, but teen health clinics are only meant to provide basic pediatric care.
Still, the report concerned some residents. "Teen pregnancy is so high right now," said Natasha Prince. "They even have 'tweens' . . . having sex as early as the age of 8."
Gotbaum wants the city to expand its reproductive health programs and better train employees on how to administer emergency contraceptives.
