Republican Rep. Peter King told News 12 Long Island Tuesday that Trump supporters in his district are the angriest at the tax overhaul drama playing out in Washington, D.C., calling the speed at which leaders are rushing through the process "insanity."
He says the last time there was a tax overhaul, it took two years.
"That's how long it should take," said Rep. King. "We are talking about a tax bill that could affect generations, and we are doing it in two to three weeks."
The House bill that passed earlier this month and the current Senate version eliminates the valuable tax break that allows taxpayers to deduct state and local income, sales and property taxes. Rep. King said that if either bill ends up passing, "It's going to be devastating to Long Island."
"It will have a horrible impact to the homeowners on Long Island, in particular," he said.
Rep. King says he and his colleagues are working with Republican Sen. Susan Collins, of Maine, who is in favor of getting those deductions back in the bill.
"It's going to be a tough few weeks. We are going to have to fight as hard as we can," said King.
King didn't parse any words to News 12, saying that Trump supporters are "disappointed" in the president.
"They voted for him because they thought they were being forgotten. Well, they are the most disappointed. I hear more from them then I do from Democrats. It's Trump supporters, people who put their faith in him, who now feel he is betraying their faith," he said.
"They feel very left out, very angry, they are the ones that are going to be hit the hardest."
