Rally held against proposed Westbury mini-casino
A Nassau County community came together Saturday to fight a proposed mini-casino in Westbury.
The currently eyed location is the site of the vacant Fortunoff store at the Mall at the Source on Old Country Road.
A number of residents say they are concerned about the influx of traffic the casino would bring to the area, in addition to general safety.
More than 1,000 residents attended a public forum on Thursday to speak out against Nassau OTB's plan to build the gambling parlor. The gymnasium at St. Brigid's School in Westbury was so crowded that people were turned away at the door.
Saturday's rally was held at the proposed casino site. The protesters even leaked onto Old Country Road and in between traffic at some points.
Much like many of his constituents, Westbury Village Mayor Peter Cavallaro is against the gaming facility. He says the push to have Nassau OTB reconsider its decision has united the community like never before.
In response, OTB officials say they will maintain an open dialogue with elected leaders and residents, and will work to address their concerns.
Organizers say there will be another public meeting concerning this issue next Wednesday at Carle Place High School at 7:30 p.m.
