Public hearing on aircraft noise held in Wainscott
East End residents got a chance to sound off about a new plan to cut down on noise from helicopters and jets flying over their communities Thursday.
As News 12 reported, residents on the East End have been complaining about noisy helicopters and jets flying over East Hampton in the summer.
The East Hampton Town Board held a public hearing on a package of laws in an effort to help mitigate the noise. The measures would ban helicopters on weekends during the summer, adopt a mandatory airport curfew from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. and limit other noisy aircraft.
Some pilots and business owners who use East Hampton Airport aren't so sure about the proposals. Andrew Sabin uses the facility on a weekly basis. He thinks the choppers should not be allowed to fly lower than 2,500 feet above ground level.
"I definitely feel there's a need for restrictions, but not restrictions that are basically guided by one person," said Sabin.
The meeting was held at LTV Studios in Wainscott.
