PSEG Long Island says it expects to have enough electric capacity to meet demand during the expected weekend heat wave.
With temperatures expected in the 90s and above, PSEG is preparing for a busy weekend. Electric load on the system is expected to be 20% to 30% higher than normal. The utility has extra crews scheduled and says it can meet demands, but admits during any heat wave there could be scattered outages.
Long Island residents are doing their own preparing by buying new air conditioners and fans - and getting generators ready just in case.
"It is gonna be really hot, and it gives me difficulty breathing, so I figured I better safer than sorry," says Linda Witte, of North Bellmore.
To ease strain on the grid, PSEG is asking residents, if they can, to conserve power whenever possible.
"(From) 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. is when we really see the peak loads, so if you can manage your energy earlier and later, that will help you and us," says John O'Connell, of PSEG Long Island.
Anyone who experiences an outage is asked to call PSEG at 1-800-490-0075, or text the word "out" to PSEG Long Island if you pre-registered.
