Protesters rallied outside of a Suffolk police precinct in Bay Shore Sunday to call for better relations with the community after a man was fatally shot in a confrontation with officers.

As News 12 has reported, 27-year-old Andres Morales was fatally shot by an officer after allegedly pulling out a gun during a chase. It happened in June of 2014 after police say Morales was pulled over, then took off running.

A department spokesperson has said the officer pursuing Morales fired because he feared for his life.

About 30 people rallied today, chanting for change. They say encounters like the one that ended with Morales' death need to stop.

"Let police walk the beat, get to know the community. We grow some respect for them, they grow some respect for us," said one protester.

"At the end of the day, I don't think my brother was shot in self-defense. I feel he was shot because they couldn't catch him," said Morale's brother, Joel Morales.

News 12 reached out to Suffolk police for a response but has not yet heard back.
