Some of the top names in golf are teeing off on Long Island this week as the 118th U.S. Open gets underway at Shinnecock Hills.
Practice rounds are being held Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Round 1 kicks off on Thursday.
Tiger Woods and Jordan Speith were spotted on the course at Shinnecock Hills. It's been 10 years since Woods has won a major championship, but he's played well as of late and is ranked 80th.
Fans were converging Monday on the South Fork. At Gabreski Airport in Westhampton Beach, people were parking their cars and vendors were selling merchandise in tents.
Fans like Ron Barone, of Dix Hills, say the bumper-to-bumper traffic getting to the event is worth it.
"It's great for the economy, it's great for camaraderie," says Barone, who is volunteering at the Open.
Local businesses are seeing a bump. At Melrose Pizza, pies were zooming out the door, and Dutch Petals was bustling to supply flowers to all the homes rented by golfers.
It's estimated that some 30,000 spectators will attend the weeklong event.
News 12 will have continuing coverage of the U.S. Open all week.
