All lanes are now open on the northbound New Jersey Turnpike in Woodbridge after a tanker truck carrying propane overturned Wednesday night, closing a portion of the highway.
The crash happened Wednesday around 8:15 p.m. on the northbound side of the highway. The cleanup lasted more than 12 hours, causing major delays during the morning rush.
According to authorities, the truck flipped over and burst into flames. The truck was involved in an accident with one other car last night around 8 p.m.
Authorities say the major issue was trying to safely remove the tank. Two large flare turnoffs could be seen from a mile away.
"It was burning off those leftover vapors to make it safe for transport because now the wheels and travel part is compromised as well, so to safely get off the turnpike we have to get all those flammable vapors out of it," says Capt. Paul Deleo.
Around 8 a.m., the flare burnoffs were out and the tanker was loaded on to a truck and towed away.
Police say the tanker driver escaped with minor injuries.
There is still no word on the condition of anyone that was inside the other car involved, but that car was totaled.
