Westchester County boutique Weezie D has served customers for 15 years, but its owner says the business now faces eviction due to hard times.
Like many other small, nonessential businesses across the state, Weezie D was forced to close its doors six weeks ago.
Owner Louisa McTurner says she received a letter from her landlord stating that she has until the end of May to move out.
The fashion boutique owner tells News 12 she’s behind on about $12,000 in rent. “I don’t have the opportunity to reopen my business...and connect with my customers," says McTurner.
In recent weeks, she’s sought out all the stimulus help offered by the government but so far, she hasn’t received any funds.
Nonetheless, McTurner understands why, saying in part, “Million of people are going after the same thing, it takes time.”
When asked why she turned to News 12 for assistance, she says she just wanted to shed light on what’s happening between tenants that are struggling and landlords.
However, News 12’s Ty Milburn spoke with McTurner’s landlord who lives next door. He says she’s not being evicted and the letter was only sent by his lawyer to protect a new investment.
McTurner’s law attorney, Lauren Raysor, believes the letter is a precursor to an eviction, something the governor put a moratorium on until the end of June.
“This is not what should be done,” says Raysor.
McTurner refuses to leave without a fight as she weighs her options. A GoFundMe account has been set up with hopes the community she’s served for 15 years will help her when she needs it the most.
