The results of a News 12-Hofstra Poll show the economy and taxes are weighing heavily on the minds of Long Island residents as the November elections draw closer.

The poll asked residents what they thought was the most important issue in November's elections.

Twenty-eight percent of respondents said the economy. Twenty percent answered property taxes.

With the high price of houses, energy costs and property taxes on Long Island, owning a home was never considered cheap. The latest statistics show it's as expensive as ever. The cost of living on Long Island is about 50 percent higher than the national average. However, the wages on Long Island are only about 10 percent higher than the national average.
