Police: UPS truck hits woman, takes off in Franklin Square

A 34-year-old woman walking at an intersection in Franklin Square was struck Monday by a UPS truck that fled the scene, investigators say.

A 34-year-old woman walking at an intersection in Franklin Square was struck Monday by a UPS truck that fled the scene, investigators say.

The incident occurred at the corner of Langdon Street and Doris Avenue around 5 p.m. Police say the UPS driver was heading north on Doris Avenue at the time of the crash.

News 12 spoke with the sister of the victim, Helen Costa, who says the driver briefly stopped, looked down at her sister, then continued on his way.

Costa says her sister is in the ICU with lacerations to her liver and trauma to her lungs and spleen. She says her sister’s condition is not improving.

Costa also says that UPS is refusing to cooperate with the police investigation.

In a statement, UPS denies the sister’s claim: "We are cooperating with local law enforcement on their investigation, but at this time there is no evidence that UPS was involved in this incident. At UPS, we hold ourselves to a high standard. The safety of our employees and general public are our highest priority."

News 12 was told that the victim was visiting Long Island from Brazil with her 2-year-old daughter. She's been here for about six months.
Police have not yet made any arrests. They are asking anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-244-TIPS.
