Police say a Coram man pretended to be a police officer and performed a traffic stop on Saturday night.

Police officers say they caught 42-year-old Thomas O'Connor performing the stop on Coram-Mount Sinai Road near West Dennis Lane in Coram.

O'Connor's gray Jeep Grand Cherokee was equipped with red and white flashing lights, police say. He was allegedly wearing a police shirt and shield on a chain around his neck, and was carrying a pellet gun and handcuffs.

O'Connor was arrested and charged with second-degree criminal impersonation of a public servant, unauthorized use of colored lights on a vehicle, and unauthorized use of a police receiver.

Police say they have not released O'Connor's mug shot for investigative reasons.

O'Connor pleaded not guilty at his arraignment and was ordered held on $5,000 bail.
