Police: Teacher lied on job application in Uniondale
Police say a man was arrested for lying on his application to be a substitute teacher within the Uniondale School District.
William Rini, of Manhasset, is a former teacher in Queens who had his license revoked by the state Education Department in 2006. According to the Nassau County district attorney, he applied to be a substitute teacher in Uniondale in 2014. Rini failed to mention that he was previously convicted of a crime on the application, officials say.
Rini, a former dean of discipline and social studies teacher in Jackson Heights, was arrested in 2003 for spanking four teenagers. The DA's office says he spanked the 13-year-old students with a hairbrush in a van and then tried to bribe them to keep quiet. He pleaded guilty to endangering the welfare of a child in 2004, and subsequently had his teaching license revoked.
Uniondale district says that Rini's criminal past was caught in the screening process, and he was never hired.
Rini was arrested Thursday morning and charged with filing a false statement. He was released on his own recognizance and is expected back in court next week.
If convicted, Rini could face up to four years in prison.
