A math teacher at Shoreham-Wading River High School is accused of having a sexual relationship with a student.
Suffolk police say Veronica Pezdan was arrested on William Floyd Parkway around 11 a.m. after she left the high school.
Police say Pezdan, who teaches math at the school, engaged in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old male student during the past two months.
Pezdan, 28, of Holbrook, is charged with two counts of rape in the third degree and two counts of endangering the welfare of a child. She will be arraigned April 20.
In an email to parents, the district stated, "Late last week, the District received a tip from a staff member regarding concerns with a high school teacher. Upon learning this information, the District immediately began an internal investigation and subsequently contacted the police. As a result, the District has been notified by the Suffolk County Police Department that a part-time high school math teacher has been arrested for third degree rape and endangering the welfare of a child. Effective immediately, this individual will no longer be employed by the district and a new teacher will be placed in the classroom. The individual in question passed all necessary New York State background checks prior to employment. The Administration and Board of Education are deeply concerned about these allegations. Please be assured that the District does not tolerate and condemns such behaviors. The District is fully cooperating with authorities. As this is a police matter, as well as a matter of personnel, the District is not able to comment further."
