Police: Pedro Hernandez, of Selden, accused of DWI in Route 347 crash that injured 2
A Selden man has been arrested for allegedly driving drunk after police say he caused a crash that seriously injured two people in Smithtown Sunday.
Investigators say Pedro Hernandez was driving a 2000 Toyota Camry eastbound in the westbound lanes on Route 347 at around 5:30 a.m. when he struck a Toyota Corolla head-on.
The driver of the Corolla, 52-year-old Reyna Pena, and her passenger, 53-year-old Lorenzo Rodriguez, were both taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with serious injuries.
Hernandez, 24, was also hopsitalized with injuries that are not considered life-threatening. He is charged with driving while intoxicated.
The crash shut down Route 347 both ways for several hours this morning as authorities investigated and cleared the scene of debris.
Detectives are asking anyone with information on the case to call the vehicular crime unit at 631-852-6555.
