A police officer fatally shot a blade-wielding man who allegedly ignored commands to drop the object in Farmingdale Friday night, according to the Howell police chief.
It happened around 10:30 p.m. at 59 Walnut St. Howell police say they received a 911 call from person who was "claiming to be dying after being stabbed by his brother."
A responding Howell police officer was confronted by an armed man who allegedly refused several commands to drop a bladed object while "approaching and challenging" the officer, according to police.
The officer fired several shots, striking the man, and then began life-saving measures on him. Responding Howell and state police officers assisted, but the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
The officer was not injured, but was hospitalized for trauma.
Multiple agencies are now investigating the incident, including state police, the Attorney General's Office, the Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office and Howell Police Internal Affairs.
Neighbors say they were shocked by the news.
"It's just devastating because we knew the family and you know, as kids we always had barbecues. But seeing it now as a crime scene, it's just sad," said Matthew Hutchinson.
The identities of those involved have not been released. In January 2019, a bill was put in place requiring the Attorney General's office to investigate any shooting death involving on duty law enforcement officers.
