A veteran NYPD officer was arrested following a hit-and-run car accident Sunday that left one woman dead and one in the hospital.
It happened at the intersection of East 55th Street and Foster Avenue.
Police have confirmed that one of their own is behind bars, accused of being at least partly responsible.
Police tell News 12 that 47-year-old NYPD Officer Rohan Shaw, who was off-duty at the time, was behind the wheel of his Nissan when it collided with a Mazda just before 5 a.m.
That Mazda spun out and hit a telephone pole. Police say 23-year-old Joanna Dixon was pronounced dead, while a 22-year-old woman is still in serious condition.
Meanwhile, police say, for an unknown reason, the driver of the Mazda ran away on foot. Shaw stayed on the scene and was originally charged with vehicular manslaughter, criminally negligent homicide, reckless driving and speed violation.
Shaw was also charged with a DWAI, or driving while ability impaired, which means his blood alcohol level was above .05 but below .07, and not quite at the .08 threshold of a full DWI.
Shaw has since been released and is not being prosecuted for those charges at this time, as police search for the driver of the Mazda and continue their investigation.
Shaw is a 20-year veteran of the NYPD.
