Police: No noise complaints in Montauk over holiday weekend
The unofficial kickoff to the summer season proved to be quieter than in years past in Montauk.
As News 12 has reported, residents have complained that out-of-control partying and rowdy behavior on their doorsteps has diminished their quality of life as Montauk's party reputation grew. East Hampton police and town officials vowed to crack down on boisterous visitors, and the initiative saw its first real test over Memorial Day weekend.
Police say there were no noise summonses issued over the weekend, although there were some other complaints. They say they issued a total of 45 other summonses on the beach and in the business district.
Officers also issued 30 parking tickets and made four arrests, including two for alleged drunken driving.
Some people who visited the tip of the South Fork say the bar scene was quieter than usual and that there was a noticeably larger police presence. But it didn't stop people from coming out and having fun.
Craig Lieder, owner of the Sunset Surf Shack, says there was a boost in customers and most seemed to be following the rules. "It was really crowded," he said. "It was packed, a good crowd of people. Everybody had fun."
"We're very happy with how the weekend went, and have received a lot of positive feedback from the community already," said East Hampton Police Chief Michael Sarlo. "We will stay the course."
